Helen's husband Sid, despite being born and bred in Wales, has only a rudimentary grasp of the language but is fortunate in being able to subcontract household linguistic duties to his more articulate partner. |

Helen travels widely in the UK, Europe and North America in connection with her work and has extensive international science collaborations. |

She is an avid solver of crossword puzzles and has twice been Times Crossword Champion (1995 and 2006). |
